City officials in Winston-Salem are searching farther into a neighborhood west of Bowman Gray Stadium after new tests detected methane vapors. The tests came as a result of a previous contamination found within the stadium.

The vapors were detected in an apartment driveway on Gholson Avenue, which is near the Bowman Gray's west-side parking lot.

The Winston-Salem Journal reports the lot covers an old landfill that's believed to be the source of the methane contamination in parts of the stadium property.

Methane is an odorless gas that can be produced in landfills. It's potentially explosive and can also cause death by suffocation.

City officials say nothing has caused them to believe anyone is in danger because of the methane, but they're taking no chances.

The city and Winston-Salem State University have been jointly funding environmental testing at the stadium property in advance of the city's prospective sale of the stadium to WSSU.
