Meet the Artist: Susan Borwick, Wake Forest Professor of Music
12:30pm Jul 29, 2014
Susan Borwick is a professor and composer at Wake Forest University, and on a good day she can sound two pitches simultaneously. WFDD Radio camper Alex Housden was able to able to find out more.
Susan walked up to me smiling with a cyan shirt with black pants. We sat down and she gave me an example of two pitches sounding simultaneously.
Did you hear it? Now I wondered that too because I've been able to do that. I don't know how I found out. You know, kids. You figure these things out.
Hearing this, you may think that she is more of a singer, but that is not the case.
I'm more of a pianist, but when I do sing - you know, the body is an instrument. And when you rely on your instrument to be in good shape, in order to play your instrument, and your instrument is your body, as it is with your voice, you've got to take care of yourself.
She is a grandparent and parent, and has taught at universities for 43 years. She told me about a conversation she had with her son about being a working parent.
Here's what he said. He said, "Mom, you were there when I needed you. I just hated that you had to work so hard." That made all of the guilt go away.
Even after 43 years of working, being a parent, and being a grandparent, Susan still goes on being a pianist and a singer.
For 88.5 WFDD Radio camp, I'm Alex Housden.
