Greensboro City Councilman Zack Matheny announced Wednesday he will be stepping down at the June 16 meeting. Matheny has been interviewed to become the next President and CEO of Downtown Greensboro Incorporated. He said in a statement that he wants to resign to avoid any perceived conflicts of interest.

"Since 2005, the experience of serving on the Zoning Commission and then City Council has been challenging and rewarding for me, but also a privilege. With gratitude and appreciation, I want to thank everyone for the support my family and I have received over the years,” says Matheny.

Matheny has represented District 3 since 2007. He ran unsuccessfully for former Rep. Howard Coble's congressional seat in 2014. The Greensboro City Council is expected to appoint Matheny's replacement during their June 16 meeting.
