Mary Kratt is prolific; she's the author of five books of poetry and nine books of non-fiction.

Kratt's work focuses primarily on the stories of the Carolina Piedmont and the South, and her work has appeared in magazines and anthologies including Tar River Poetry, Shenandoah, Greensboro Review, and more. She's the winner of the Brockman Campell Poetry Book prize and the Oscar Arnold Young Award.

Mary's latest book is a compilation of new and selected poems titled Watch Where You Walk. And the book has it all - half new poems, half poetry from her other books including On the Steep Side, Valley & Spirit Going Barefoot. The poems tell Mary's story as well as those of historical figures such as John White, Dorothy Wordsworth, Anna Hyatt Huntington, and more.

Mary will be reading from Watch Where You Walk at Scuppernong Books on May 7th at 7pm. She will be joined by Miriam Herin and Sandra Redding.

Bethany spoke with Mary about the ability to embrace playfulness in poetry.
