A German supermarket chain will open its first stores in the U.S. this summer, with 25 stores in North Carolina.

Lidl is a no-frills chain, often compared to its competitor - Aldi - another German brand already in the U.S.

The company plans to open 100 locations along the East Coast within the year, with the most in North Carolina. John Brasier with the Triad Business Journal says the state is appealing for several reasons.

“North Carolina has a good solid economy right now. It's projected to continue growing, and so they feel that the market exists for new grocery stores to come in.”

Brasier adds that the state has a robust transportation system. Lidl prices will be lower than those at major grocery store chains like Lowe's or Harris Teeter by focusing on store-brand items.

North Carolina stores will include locations in Greensboro, Winston-Salem, and Burlington among other cities.
