Layoffs are expected at ITG Brands, the company that bought Lorillard's cigarette production plant last year. ITG won't say how many jobs will be cut, or give a timeline.

The company acquired the Reidsville plant as part of a multi-billion dollar merger of Reynolds American and Lorillard.

While ITG picks up most of Reynolds' cigarette brands, Lorillard will keep the popular Newport menthol brand.

Company spokesman Mark Smith tells the Winston-Salem Journal that ITG will need fewer workers once it stops producing Newport in June.

He says employees learned of the planned layoffs earlier this week.

Smith couldn't say whether the job cuts would occur at the Reidsville plant or at ITG's facility in Danville, Virginia.

The company will be working with several unions to arrange a timeline and the number of layoffs.
