High Point has seen a significant drop in heroin overdoses from a year ago.  Police attribute the decline to arrests targeting a local street gang.

35 heroin overdoses and one heroin-related death were reported from Jan. 1 through June 30. For the same period in 2014, there were 64 heroin overdoses  and eight heroin-related deaths.

Police Chief Marty Sumner told the News and Record the drop in overdoses and deaths is closely connected to the downfall of a High Point-based street gang know as the “Bando Boys”.

A number of arrests in December cut off a majority of the drugs being sold in the city.

With the spotlight on the heroin problem, several outreach rehabilitation agencies have been working together to offer education and resources for addicts.

On Tuesday, the Guilford Coalition for Medication Education, Detection and Safety will hold a town hall meeting in High Point to talk about the overdoses in the region and offer help to people who are addicted.
