The Greensboro City Council has voted to close a portion of West Lindsay Street downtown, which opens the door to build a $50 million mixed-use development and hotel.

The Greensboro News and Record reports the council voted 8-1 Tuesday to close West Lindsay between Eugene Street and Battleground Avenue, despite the concerns by residents and downtown business owners.

Council members that approved the road closure said that potential payoff in tax revenue and boost to downtown businesses was worth making the change.

The project from developer Roy Carroll would include 300 upscale apartments and a 100+ room hotel. Councilman Jamal Fox cast the lone vote against the closure of West Lindsay Street.
