Golf legend and Wake Forest University alum Arnold Palmer made a special lunch delivery Friday to a senior in Winston-Salem.

Meals on Wheels in Forsyth County is celebrating the delivery of the 5-millionth lunch to a local homebound senior citizen. To mark the non-profit organization’s major milestone, Arnold Palmer personally delivered the meal to a home on W. 27th Street.

Palmer, 84, arrived at the residence in a golf cart. He was greeted by members of Senior Services and McBride’s caregiver. Palmer says he hopes his star power will bring more awareness about food insecurity issues for seniors.

“Meals on Wheels volunteers keep these people feeling comfortable and they get their meals without great efforts and that is good. From what I see the people who are doing it really enjoy doing it, so it is a God send from all ways,” says Palmer.

Inside the home, Juanita McBride, 84, sat in her chair, anxiously waiting for her hot meal and the chance to meet Palmer. She says the Meals on Wheels program is helping her maintain her independence, and stay in her own home.

“I feel great. I’m not able to cook. I don't feel like cooking, so this comes in handy. It makes me want to cry,” says McBride.

McBride says she also loves the companionship from volunteers who deliver her meals throughout the week. In Forsyth County, more than 1,700 community members donate their time to the Meals on Wheels program.
