The former chairman of the UNC Board of Governors was arrested Thursday on a charge related to taking a gun through an airport. It's the latest problem for John Fennebresque, who left his post amid controversy.

Until October, Fennebresque was chairman of the board that oversees the colleges in the UNC system. But he resigned under pressure. Critics said he mishandled the ouster of former UNC system president Tom Ross and the hiring of current president Margaret Spellings.

Charlotte-Mecklenburg police told WSOC-TV that Fennebresque tried to take a gun through a security checkpoint at Charlotte-Douglas International Airport.

He told police he forgot the gun was in his bag.

Fennebresque was charged with possession of a weapon on city property, a misdemeanor. He was released on a $500 bond.
