The small Davidson County community of Denton is losing its largest private employer. Councill Furniture is closing two of its plants.

Denton is a small town, with a population of 1,600 residents, so jobs in this part of Davidson County are scarce. The closing comes after RHF Investments announced it was buying several other furniture companies including Councill - but not Councill's factories in Denton. Around 120 people will lose their jobs.

Steve Googe with the County's Economic Development Commission says the company has struggled for several years and has had rounds of layoffs.

“I think it's a situation that the community has kind of adapted to and although I think they were disappointed, I don't think it was a surprise.”

Googe says the company is expected to shutter its operations by the end of June. But he says he's optimistic about what the future holds for the two Councill plants. He says that's because a European company is already expressing interest in those properties.
