House and Senate Republicans have made public their final North Carolina budget proposal for the coming two years. Senate leader Phil Berger and House Speaker Tim Moore put the finishing touches on the plan late last week and shared it publicly Monday afternoon.
The $21.7 billion budget plan grows state spending by 3.1 percent, fully funds teaching assistants at the present level and provides a $750 bonus for all state employees.
Berger and Moore also announced the budget includes a comprehensive tax reform package, and reduces the personal income tax rate in 2017. The measure does not redistribute sales taxes, which has been a contentious proposal in recent months.
Both the House and Senate must vote twice in favor of the compromise before it goes to the governor. The Senate will vote on the budget tomorrow with the House expected to vote Thursday. The budget was initially due 76 days ago.
