The Steep Canyon Rangers are one of the hottest bluegrass bands on the scene today. A few friends from UNC-Chapel Hill started the band. They decided they'd have to perform at the top levels, and needed to write their own songs to do so. They impressed comedian and banjo picker Steve Martin enough that he's called on them repeatedly to tour with him. On their own, they follow a heavy touring schedule with songs both classic-sounding and genre-bending. Across the Blue Ridge host Paul Brown talks with band member Graham Sharp on this week's show, and plays some of the Rangers' music. Plus … fiddle tunes and songs from and about Texas, featuring a couple of rare old pieces performed by Howard Raines and Tricia Spencer. We start the show with some powerful Blue Ridge music from The Camp Creek Boys, and the show just rolls along picking up speed from there.
