Public health officials say a third person in Guilford County has died from the flu.

The Department of Health and Human Services in Raleigh says that brings the total number of flu deaths across North Carolina so far this season to seven.

Officials say the deaths vary in age groups, but no one 24 years old or younger has died from the flu this season. North Carolina's first three flu deaths this season were reported in early December.

Flu season typically peaks during January and February. Complications from flu can be particularly dangerous for high risk groups including infants under 2, pregnant women, and people with conditions such as asthma, diabetes and heart disease.

The Guilford County Health Department and the Centers for Disease Control in Atlanta recommend that everyone six months of age or older receive a flu shot.  The CDC Website also has a good deal of information about influenza and vaccines,   Flu shots are available from your health care provider, and may also be obtained from some county health departments.  For a flu shot appointment at the Guilford County Health Department, call (336) 641-3245.

The Department also recommends these measures to reduce the chances of contracting influenza:

  •  frequent and thorough hand washing and/or the use of alcohol-based hand sanitizers
  •  coughing and sneezing into your bent elbow or sleeve
  •  staying home when you are sick;  staying away from others who are sick;
  •  eating healthful foods; and
  •  getting enough rest to avoid flu and other viruses and colds.
